| Bryan Fischer |
Not too long ago, I was responding
to a friend’s status update on Facebook that had to do with Bryan Fischer. Mr.
Fischer, of course, had said or written something ridiculous. And, as a result, had inflamed the
indignation of several of my friend’s Facebook friends.
Some of their responses surprised
me by surpassing vitriol. Indeed, some were bordering on threatening. While I very strongly
disagree with Mr. Fischer's political and religious positions, I strongly and adamantly defend his right to speak his mind. I defended
him in the thread of responses.
But, the experience stayed with me
and I’ve struggled with how intelligent, fact-based, compassionate people
should respond to those that broadcast dangerous nonsense from an influential
bully pulpit. In short, what’s the best way to ensure that someone as ignorant
and callous as Bryan Fischer has the least amount of influence?
The answer, I think, is to ridicule
him further into obscurity. Threats of violence and vehement indignation
have proven over the years to actually fuel Mr. Fischer’s militant stupidity.
So, I think it’s high time someone put forth the effort to disarm his
misinformed, dangerous buffoonery by making a complete and total joke of him.
